Feliz Navidad

I'm joining Foodie Friday over at Designs By Gollum
Homer Laughlin China Company produced this line of vintage dinnerware
decorated with the "Mexicana" decals.  The table is set for a Mexican
Fiesta with some treats from the summer garden, including chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce, salsa and chips and spicy cheese stuffed peppers.
Recipes and other Foodie details at the links above.

Las Posadas
Christmas festivities begin with Las Posadas, nine consecutive days of candelight processions and lively parties starting December 16.

Las Pastorelas
Pastorelas (Shepherds Plays) are staged throughout the holiday season by both amateur and professional groups.

Nativity scenes, or El Nacimiento
In most Mexican homes the principal holiday adornment is el Nacimiento (Nativity scene).

Mexicana pieces came in many sizes, which makes it perfect for a
multi-course feast.

The layers of the stack.

The yellow striped version is much harder to find.

Christmas Eve -- Noche Buena
Holiday festivities culminate on Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) with the celebration of a late-night Misa de Gallo (Rooster's Mass).

Poinsettias: La Flor de Noche Buena
It's Latin name is Euphorbia Pulcherrima. It's Mexican names include the ancient Nahuatl term Cuitlaxochitl (star flower), along with Catarina (Catherine), Flor de Pastor (Shepherd's Flower) and most commonly Flor de Noche Buena (Christmas Eve Flower).

Los Santos Inocentes
December 28, Day of the Holy Innocents, is a religious commemoration of King Herod's ordering the slaughter of all male infants in his kingdom, intended to include the Christ Child. In Mexico it is celebrated as a day akin to April Fool's, an occasion for jokes and pranks.

The Three Kings: Los Reyes Magos
The Christmas season continues unabated in Mexico through Epiphany, which is called Día de los Reyes (Three Kings Day).

Thanks so much for coming to the Fiesta!

  2. I love your Feliz Navidad, Candy. When I first started collecting P86, I saw a photo layout in BHG about a Mexican-themed Christmas using rose and persimmon. I've been thinking about that one now that it's Christmas tablescape seasons and wanting to revisit that theme. How exciting to see yours come to life on TLRT!

  8. Good Morning!

Getting down to the wire here at The Little Round Table, how about you? Major push to get things done in the next couple of days and then move into major relax and enjoy mode. :-)

Thank you all for your wonderful comments on my Feliz Navidad table. I'll be adding some details on the items included at the end of the post. I just ran out of time yesterday.

Deb, I have used a serape for this theme before, but don't like the texture of mine, too scratchy!

Susan, the little pots were a gift from my daughter, who spent a summer studying in the highlands of Bolivia in the early 90s. Part of a study program while she was getting her master's in Biological Anthropology at Duke. The little church came from a gift shop when we lived in Alamo, CA in the 80s. I've added an image of all three at the end of the post.

Daphne, I remember that article! LOL

Must get at it .... so little time left and the computer monitor is a time wasting magnet!
