Since I started blogging late in August last summer, I've had a lot of questions about
my kitchen. I thought I'd share how it came about in 2006. Some of the early images
take a bit of imagination, but I'd done a smaller very white version of this kitchen in
our last house so I had a vision from the beginning and eagerly awaited every nail and
piece of wallboard. Feb 2006 it was gonna happen!
The windows on the right are above the kitchen sink. It was a very wet February!
Can you visualize it yet?
How about now???
Now it's easy ..... woohooo it was time for cabinets!
And then came the paint. There are three colors of paint on the walls and ceiling.
Dining in style!
The hardwood floors protected by "pink" paper. We had already started moving in,
even though the house was not yet completed. I did the stenciling on the walls and
then started the big job of moving dishes from one house to the next by the carload.
Things have moved around in the cabinets over the last 3 years as I've settled into this
kitchen. It is a design that works for me, just fine tuned from the last kitchen I did.
Here it is today with a table set for turkey dinner on this lovely Sunday afternoon.
I'll be sharing the tablescape for another of Susan's parties on Thursday. Be sure to
stop back for Tablescape Thursday this week for details on this table.
I'd be happy to share additional details of how this kitchen morphed from wood and nails into
a wonderful place to cook and gather with friends and family. Ask your questions, cause I
never get tired of talking about dishes or my kitchen!
I'm joining everyone over at Between Naps On The Porch with our lovely hostess Susan for another Metamorphosis Monday.
I love when an idea in your head comes together in reality. I especially love the Fiesta pitchers above the stove top. I'll keep watching for more!
ReplyDeleteWow, I feel like I am looking at a magazine. Your kitchen is probably one of the most beautiful rooms I have ever seen. I love all the colors you selected and your stenciling work is magic! I would be scared half to death if it didn't come out evenly!

Oh, Candy! Your kitchen is a complete dream! I love the cabinets and those unending ceilings! The light is perfect too! Now look at that precious table! Oh, you're good.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia :)
Great vision here. You must be so pleased with the final results. There are so many great elements in this room. I do love the farmhouse sink...or the stove or the flooring or the stencils or the.....you get the picture.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a the kitchen of all kitchens. It's so huge. I love all the windows, and the height, and the island is adorable.
ReplyDeleteWonderful kitchen and dining space. How nice to have a kitchen flooded with natural light. Thanks for sharing the photos of the steps. Fun to see how it came to be. ~ Sarah
ReplyDeleteOh, how strikingly beautiful! I absolutely love the super high ceiling. This is fabulous!!! What a great job of showing each little change as it took place, to! FUN! This should be in a magazine!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I just LOVE the ceiling height and the arch! I'm new to the blogging world and will definitely be checking back!!!
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job on the kitchen, I love it. So many wonderful details. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSandy
WOWEE!! amazing! Love the tall ceilings..
ReplyDeleteSooo beautiful! Love it, love it, love it!!
ReplyDeleteWow! I'd love to know how you came up with this. It's really stunning!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you all enjoyed hearing the story of my kitchen! Thanks for stopping by and leaving your sweet comments. It is so much fun and I do love all the light that I get.
ReplyDeleteThe ceilings are over 15 feet and give lots of "breathing" room in the space. My contractor thought it was crazy, until he saw the kitchen evolving over the months and admitted that he would be using my idea in future projects. :-)
Nicole.....I've had a lot of kitchens over the years, so I think it is just an accumulation of ideas that went into the design. And after a number of years in an all stainless and white cabinets kitchen, I was ready for a drastic change.
Thanks again for all your lovely remarks!
Candy
Oh be still my ♥...I am in total love & sheer heaven!! I thought I had a good sized kitchen. Pfffftt...mine is a closet compared to yours! LOL
ReplyDeleteThis has to be such a pleasure to work in & I bet it is the most popular room in the house, where everyone gathers. Ours is.
I would give my right arm for that stove. I HATE MINE! I can't wait for it to die (or I hit the lottery) so I can replace it.
Thank you so much for allowing us a peak into your beautiful world. I sure would love to sit at that table & share with a cuppa tea with you on your gorgeous Fiesta. I did tell you that my DD has lots of it, didn't I?

Candy, I'm in love. I don't know where to begin on writing what I like about your kitchen. First, the post and giving us a progression of your vision. And a vision it is. I love the mantle above your stove the best, I love what the feeling is when turn the corner and see that space. And spacious it is. So many questions. I'll need to go back and read more.
ReplyDeleteHow big is the space? Did you design it yourself? I love stone and solid surface, what did you choose for the countertops. I love wide plank wood floors, what did you chose?
Okay, I better stop before this gets too long, it already has!
Stunning. This is an enormous kitchen...yummy!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for stopping by to take a look at my kitchen! And thank you for all your lovely compliments.
ReplyDeleteI did design it myself (along with the rest of the house) and tried to include all the things that had worked in past kitchens I had worked in over the years in different houses.
The kitchen is approx 20'x 20
The hood surround came from a company in Sacramento and is one of my favorite features in the kitchen.
The Viking range is a wonderful piece of equipment.
The counters are granite "Costa Esmeralda". Depending on what part of the quarry it comes from it can be very blue or more green. We waited and looked for almost a year to find large enough "green" slabs to use in the kitchen.
The pine flooring came as raw wood from Carlisle and was stained and sealed in our choice of colors. It runs throughout the house, no carpet, no vinyl, just all pine flooring. It helps make all the rooms "seem" larger and flow together with no break for a seamless look. Look at the pictures closely and see that the flooring helps to make the room seem larger than it actually is. To read more about the company we dealt with go to www.wideplankflooring.com
The cabinets are a mid-range line by Medallion in Knotty Alder. In the white kitchen I talked about in the last house, I went for custom high end cabinets. Never again. I spent as much on those cabinets, which after all only hold dishes, as I did on the entire kitchen shown above - including the appliances.
There is no permanent island in the kitchen. I have several pieces that come and go and serve that function. A storage piece with butcher block top and drawers below (you can't really see it in these images) is due for a makeover and new paint job soon. I've had it for about 20 years and it has been in my last 3 kitchens, as well as in my daughter's kitchen for a few of those years. Still trying to decide what color to paint it - down to three choices: medium gray, a soft green or yellow/gold to match one of the wall colors. Time will tell!
I also have a stainless steel 6 x 3 prep table that just recently left the scene, as it seemed to just collect stuff. I never really used it as a prep table. Gotta have myself looking out the window and near the sink. It may make a return appearance, but right now it is in my greenhouse.
Thanks for your interest!
Candy
It's amazing!! I remember your other kitchen was in a magazine from the Fiestafanatic website. I thought that was my dream kitchen but this one: WOW!!! This should be in a magazine. I used to visit that site at least once a week if not more. I would show my friend everytime I discoverd something new on your site to convince her to collect Fiesta. I did succeed. She even has more vintage pieces than I do. Amazing!!
ReplyDeleteHi Monica, so glad you found me again. I still have all the pictures from the renovation on the old kitchen, maybe I'll put a post together on it too. :-)

This was so interesting. Your kitchen is just beautiful. I love all of those colors and, being a Fiestaware fan, loved the pitchers all lined up on the mantle over the stove (Does one call such a thing a mantle?). I feel as though I've found a kindred spirit in someone who loves talking about dishes. Me too!

ReplyDeleteThere is a separate post that gives the info about the color choices. There are three colors of paint, right side wall and ceiling is #199. Left side wall and back wall is #2144-40 and the range bump out is #492. Additional info at this link:
