Shades of William Morris

Today's vintage tablecloth is one I have nicknamed "Shades of William Morris"

William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896) was an English textile designer, artist, writer, and socialist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement.

Morris founded a design firm in partnership with the artist Edward Burne-Jones, and the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti which profoundly influenced the decoration of churches and houses into the early 20th century. He was also a major contributor to reviving traditional textile arts and methods of production, and one of the founders of the SPAB, now a statutory element in the preservation of historic buildings in the UK.

Some of his wallpaper designs.

This vintage tablecloth reminds me of some of the classic forms seen in Morris' work. More details on this tablescape at the end of today's post.

Thanks so much for stopping by again today!

  4. Oh my goodness, what a beautiful tablecloth. I am a fabric-holic and love seeing all the beautiful prints. I saved 2 vintage cloths from my mother's things, but none were as beautiful as what I have seen on your blog. Where do you find them all?

  10. I really like this tablecloth Candy! The colors are great and it almost seems like a cross between paisley and an Amish/PA Dutch design:@)

  24. I was pleased with the way this one turned out too! And so odd that just folded up it really doesn't have a lot of personality or general appeal. Picked it up for a song, which makes it nice too. :-)

Thanks for all your nice comments!

  29. I just love the colors you used on this table. I found myself smiling at the fresh, soft spring look. I used to have a very large set of vintage Fiesta (I had an offer I couldn't refuse) and this brought back some fun memories.
