This week's letter is "G"

The garden is all abuzz as the Canary Date Palms (Phoenix canariensis) break into bloom.

Cooler nights and days in the 70s make the Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) very happy

in the garden.  It's at about 5' tall right now and will get cut down to about 12" in

another month or so, only to rise again next Spring.

There's probably close to 200 square feet of this beauty in the garden, grown from

about six cuttings taken from my old garden in 2007.

All the succulents in the garden are enjoying the cooler weather too and they
are wearing their lovely Fall colors to brighten the garden.

Last Winter was very hard on many things in my garden, including many of my Jade plants

that didn't appreciate the drop into the 30sF and the hard frosts.  They are rebounding and 

beginning to bloom.  Withered and dried stems are evidence of last year's damage.

One of my favorite perennials in the garden is Tagetes lemonii, a carefree perennial

Marigold that reseeds freely and is extremely aromatic. It's at about 5' surrounding

this garden light, but will soon be cut down for the winter.

Salvia madrensis is a beautiful yellow flowered perennial also known as Forsythia Sage.

My "fruitless" olive trees (Olea europaea - 'Treeland Fruitless')

are putting on a lot of olives this year!

A quick stop in the Rose Garden .... the Roses are coming out of their summer funk,

when our extremely hot dry temperatures can soar to 100+ for days.  Our weather has

been a little crazy lately, jumping around from 95F to 42F with an early hard rain storm.

Some of the roses are showing signs of distress at what should be a fairly temperate month.

Some soggy rain damage and buds that haven't fully unfurled, but still beatiful color

in my November Zone 10B garden.

This is a beautiful rose with more yellow during the warmer months.

It always reminds me of the ruffles on the skirts of Flamenco dancers.

The clowns and dive bombers of the garden.

I have three feeders just outside the kitchen windows for the hummer crew.

At any given time during the year we have dozens of hummers that visit

the feeders, consuming 2-3 quarts of liquid food daily. Some go south for the

winter, but many of them are year round residents in my garden.

These images were all taken through the kitchen windows when I should

have been making dinner!
