This Week In My Garden: It's November!

Join in the party for another Wordless Wednesday!

Stop by and see the Pineapple Sage for Rednesday over at It's A Very Cherry World

Check out all the outdoor shots over at A Southern Daydreamer for Outdoor Wednesday
and
I'm also using the letter "G"
G is for GARDEN
and
G is for GREEN
and
I'm joining Jenny Matlock for another Alphabe-Thursday

This week's letter is "G"

The garden is all abuzz as the Canary Date Palms (Phoenix canariensis) break into bloom.

Cooler nights and days in the 70s make the Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans) very happy
in the garden.  It's at about 5' tall right now and will get cut down to about 12" in
another month or so, only to rise again next Spring.

There's probably close to 200 square feet of this beauty in the garden, grown from
about six cuttings taken from my old garden in 2007.

All the succulents in the garden are enjoying the cooler weather too and they
are wearing their lovely Fall colors to brighten the garden.

Last Winter was very hard on many things in my garden, including many of my Jade plants
that didn't appreciate the drop into the 30sF and the hard frosts.  They are rebounding and
beginning to bloom.  Withered and dried stems are evidence of last year's damage.

One of my favorite perennials in the garden is Tagetes lemonii, a carefree perennial
Marigold that reseeds freely and is extremely aromatic. It's at about 5' surrounding
this garden light, but will soon be cut down for the winter.

Salvia madrensis is a beautiful yellow flowered perennial also known as Forsythia Sage.

My "fruitless" olive trees (Olea europaea - 'Treeland Fruitless')
are putting on a lot of olives this year!

A quick stop in the Rose Garden .... the Roses are coming out of their summer funk,
when our extremely hot dry temperatures can soar to 100+ for days.  Our weather has
been a little crazy lately, jumping around from 95F to 42F with an early hard rain storm.
Some of the roses are showing signs of distress at what should be a fairly temperate month.
Some soggy rain damage and buds that haven't fully unfurled, but still beatiful color
in my November Zone 10B garden.

'Tequila La Sevillana'
This is a beautiful rose with more yellow during the warmer months.
It always reminds me of the ruffles on the skirts of Flamenco dancers.

The clowns and dive bombers of the garden.
I have three feeders just outside the kitchen windows for the hummer crew.
At any given time during the year we have dozens of hummers that visit
the feeders, consuming 2-3 quarts of liquid food daily. Some go south for the
winter, but many of them are year round residents in my garden.

These images were all taken through the kitchen windows when I should
have been making dinner!

I received quite a few emails and comments on the hummers in my garden,
so I've added a Postscript with only hummers:

Thanks so much for coming by to visit the garden again this week!

  6. Absolutely gorgeous photos of your lovely garden! I especially love the very first photo - I've never seen Date Palms blooming (or at all, for that matter!). They look like popcorn kernals on a stalk, so much fun. And oh my gosh, I'm dying of envy over here with your hummer photos! All we ever get is one hummingbird. We have a territorial male and he chases everyone else away. WAH!

    Happy Rednesday,
    Sally

  28. I'm so glad you came by to stroll through the garden with me! Thank you all for your generous comments, I do appreciate them.

I'm using a Nikon D90 on an automatic setting with the standard kit lens. All the credit should go to the camera, NOT me. :-) These were taken through the kitchen window from inside the house.

I've added a postscript post to this with a whole page of hummer images:

    http://happenstancestuffhappens.blogspot.com/2010/11/this-week-in-my-garden-its-november_03.html

I used to do cards with some of my flower images, but haven't done any in years.

Thanks again for coming by and commenting....I'm a happy gardener.

  41. What a beautiful stop on our little journey through Alphabe-Thursday's letter "G".

I love pineapple sage. It is one of my favorites...that color of red is always so elegant mixed with artemesias and roses.

I was in my rose garden this morning and things are starting to look lovely again there, too. I covet a few of your varities I don't have. I need a bigger garden! But isn't that an always complaint of people who love plants?

Thanks for letting us share this lovely visit with you.

It was a GGGGGGGreat stop for the letter "G".
