I'm so excited........just about couldn't sleep last night!
A few days ago a reader posted information about "Those French Plates"
If that wasn't enough, I spent the afternoon Googling for more info.
There were pieces for sale.
There was a collector's book released in September of 2009.
There were pieces for sale on eBay.
Everything was in French!!
Now I'm a long time eBayer under any number of UserId's, but have never gone
any further afield than Canada ....... and a couple of those turned into tricky deals.
Fast forward after a couple of days back and forth with a seller in France about shipping,
insurance, figuring out the conversion rate ....... bid on 3 listings and won 2!
I about p**d my pants ....... it's been a long long time since I got excited about an eBay auction.
AND he is sending me the collector's book which is not available here in the same package!!
Did I tell you I can't speak French or read French??
Not to worry, Google Translate is my friend.

So two plates will be added, and there appear to be MANY more designs that were made.

ReplyDeleteI didn't expect that you would bid on the plates on Ebay in France, but I am so glad that you did, and that you are adding two more plates to your collection! I can't wait to see your two new plates!
Since you had not responded right away, I was worried that you had not seen my comment. Now I know why--you were spending all of your time "googling" and corresponding with the seller in France!
I hope that you got a good price for the plates. Did you see the ones that were for sale at an internet antique site for $125 each?
I took Spanish in junior high school, and German in high school. My husband, though, majored in French in college. Maybe, if you need help with some translations, he could help you.

This has been such a wonderful experience to actually find out what they are and that there are MORE of them......I'm just plain giddy, as you can probably tell.
And I may be calling on your hubby to help with translations. These apparently all have names and the two new ones are "Le tonnelier" ("The Cooper") and "Le galant jardinier" ("The Gentleman Gardener").
Thanks again, it will probably be several weeks before these arrive from France, just hoping they arrive undamaged. I already have some ideas for a tablescape for EIGHT this time!

ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for you. It's been a long time for me too that I got excited about an ebay purchase. I do remember bidding on some flatware from England and being very worried over exchange rates and shipping. Thankfully all turned out well.

ReplyDeleteBack at this afternoon, trying to catch up on all the nice comments on recent posts. I've been keeping an eye on the weather with this series of storms moving in from the coast......lots of water!! The birds are keeping me busy trying to feed them enough and the poor hummers feeders are still out in the rain, but they are eating furiously trying to keep up their strength. We have several dozen that stick around all year long and they are hungry buggers!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to relax until these arrive....but I am in the process of planning another tablescape using the plates. I generally don't spend time planning, I just grab dishes and put them on the table, so this planning ahead is keeping my mind occupied so I don't fret about breakage and shippers tossing my goodies around. :-)
I just saw this post and am so excited. I have some of these plates. My mother bought them when we lived in Germany, 55+ years ago.
ReplyDeleteI have 4 of them, 2 were broken many years ago. I inherited them when my mother died. I have given them to my daughter as they were not "happy" in my home. She has them hung on either side of the fireplace.
How wonderful to know more about them.
Oh now I'm getting freaked out. To know nothing about these plates for all these years and now it's like a dam has burst with all kinds of fun things happening!

I have six plates.
My parents bought them 55+ years ago when we lived in Germany.
I inherited them from my parents.
Mine have been hung on the wall in the past, but now I use them for meals too.
You MUST tell us more ...... are we living parallel lives? Do tell, where did you live in Germany, why were you there, must KNOW the details!!
