I'm joining Coloradolady's party today for Vintage Thingies Thursday.
Be sure to stop by and see some favorite vintage things posted by the participants.
I've always loved books and have saved some of my favorites from my childhood.
I received "Miss Hickory" by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey for my birthday in 1947.
It won the Newbery Award in 1947 and is still in print and available from many
retailers. I loved the illustrations by Ruth Gannett just as much as the stories of
Miss Hickory and her many adventures.
And the page that scared me silly then .... and pretty much does to this day!
Great memories of many hours escaping into Miss Hickory's world as I read this
book many times over.
Candy~What a treasure that you have held onto all these years. I love the graphics and I have to agree with you, the squirrel holding the nuthead is a little scary!!

What a cute book but I had to giggle a bit at the squirrel holding her head! Very special that you still have those books:)
ReplyDeleteCandy, how wonderful of you to share this with us! Sensational little book!

What a great old book, and the illustrations are just amazing! And I can see why you were terrified of that page. That girl lost her head!
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT!
Carol
I love your book, especially the illustrations. Miss Hickory reminds me of folk art dolls.
ReplyDeleteI can remember the Poky Little Puppy from when I was a child.....given away my age here. Books were so simple, and pure back then. AS compared today, they have lost their innocence of the child like state!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great book! I don't believe I remember this one, but it is charming with the illustrations. Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have these great old books!

Lovely book with delightful illustrations. Love the Poky Little Puppy book too.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first I've heard of Miss Hickory, but the other book showing, The Pokey Little Puppy was my absolute favorite. I've read it a hundred times to my kids and now my grand kids!
ReplyDeleteI do so remember The Pokey Little Puppy..my son still has a copy.. I always loved those little Golden story books. Happy VTT..
ReplyDeleteI found you through the Vintage Thingies Thursday! I have never heard of that book, but it looks so interesting! I love vintage books. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHow very special that you kept this book and the story that goes with it. Thanks for sharing, Vicky
ReplyDeleteAfter I saw a picture of Miss Hickory, I vaguely remember reading this book also. I'm glad you still have this great memory to hold onto.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember "Miss Hickory" from my childhood - - - but the "Poky Little Puppy" is a different story, it was ALWAYS one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI have a few books from my childhood including the Pokey Little Puppy. Of course most of my books are from the early 1960's but they are now 50 years old.....dang I feel old. Lovely graphics in your book.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is a bit scary, but kids love to be scared. I have worked as a volunteer storyteller at the library and in schools and The Pokey Little Puppy is still popular. Great vintage books!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Susan and Bentley
