Christmas Eve Lunch on The Little Round Table

The count down to Christmas has started here in the kitchen where The Little Round Table lives.  I never count down days, just the last 48 hours until the kids and families arrive on Christmas Day.

No fancy lunch around here today, the kitchen is filled with prep areas for cookies and pies, cranberries are simmering on the stove and two dozen eggs have been shelled for deviled eggs.  Over the many years that I have been making these big dinners for Christmas I've worked out a system so that I too can enjoy the pleasures of a day of presents and joy and of grandchildren racing through the house.  In the last couple of years I've refined my system so that I only make the turkey, gravy, stuffing, my special deviled eggs and LOTS of desserts! The rest of the meal depends on the rest of the extended family to work out amongst themselves.  It's a great system!

I'm all set up for lunch tomorrow with this vintage tablecloth topped with bright Fiesta colors that reflect the anticipation I feel with family soon to arrive. Green depression glasses are vintage and the goblets are from Pier 1, flatware from Macy's years ago, napkin rings from Bed Bath Beyond, and my favorite vintage look napkins from battenburglace.com at $24 a dozen. The chargers are acrylic and I've also had those for years and years.

The two little elves came from a holiday store on Watt Ave in Sacramento during the holiday season of 1969.I had a sixth month old on one hip and was on my way to pick up a four year old from preschool.  How time flies.  The little square red ceramic house was a gift from that six month old when she was about 10 years old. Some things old, some things new, they all make up what my family's Christmas means to me.

Classic Blue and Yellow

Or as it is known in Fiesta speak ...... Sapphire and Sunflower.

This vintage tablecloth is paired with two of the Fiesta blues .... Periwinkle and

Sapphire, plus Sunflower.  Vintage Fiesta Cobalt Blue in the form of the Marmalade

Jar and the Sauce Boat are also joining in this celebration of classic yellow and blue.

Contemporary napkins with a vintage feel are paired with $1 napkin rings from

Bed Bath Beyond, along with vintage American Directoire sterling.

Fiesta can play with the everyday as well as the fancy stuff!

Vintage Cobalt Fiesta Sauce Boat

It takes a sharp eye and some experience to distinguish between contemporary

Sapphire (very limited run and initially it was an exclusive for Bloomie's )
and vintage Cobalt.  Making this comparison even more confusing is that the
creamer was an item that was not officially produced in Sapphire, but there
are a few of them out there.  The covered sugar has the classic vintage finial and
handles in this Cobalt example.

This Fiesta Dripcut Syrup Pitcher and Cream Soup Bowl are vintage Yellow Fiesta.

One of the newest items recently released is the Fiesta Jam Jar in Sunflower and White, with a

Sapphire not officially produced Juice Pitcher just in the image at the left.  The tall pitcher clad in

Fiesta Sunflower glaze is from a very short lived line called Fiestaware2000 and was produced for

a charity auction for the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association.

The "crystalline" glazed carafe at the center of the table is another piece of contemporary

Fiesta that was produced especially for one of the ELHSAA auctions.  The Periwinkle

Juice pitcher alongside the Carafe is an oddity with the interior glazed in Turquoise and the

exterior in Periwinkle.  When the glaze is applied prior to firing, the different colors are almost

indistinguishable from one and other.

To finish off, here's the anatomy of the place setting.

and dinner plate in Sapphire.
