Melanerpes formicivorus - Acorn Woodpecker
Males do not have the black band between their white face and red topknot.
We have approximately 2 dozen that live in a family group in our oak trees.
They are very territorial and live here year round.
They won't notice, will they?
Intruder intruder intruder!!!
(followed by lots of hummer screeching and the
troops coming to take a look)
Heh heh heh ..... he was actually chortling.
This went on for about 10 minutes as he continued to suck up the yummy nectar.
He stopped back at the bird feeders and then took off uphill to check on the family.
Below is a female with the black band on her forehead.
And here below is another male.
What? That was actually for hummers? No. It was all for me, the king of the woodpeckers!
ReplyDeleteSo funny to see Mr. Woodpecker trying to balance on the hummer feeder. LOL
